Songfacts®:

  • This intimate country-folk-leaning track addresses the need to reset and re-engage with our human emotions. The slow burning song was the first one that Matt Bellamy wrote after completing Muse's Drones world tour.

The frontman sings of the need he felt to return home and restore a connection with his loved ones after the grueling time on the road.

Oh, oh, oh, less than a mile left on the road
Oh, oh, oh, I will be crawling though your door
    I need something human, human
    Human, human

Bellamy told Billboard: "As soon as I came off the road, 'Something Human' came out, which is a more tender, down-to-earth, simplistic song about what it feels like to be burned out and wanting to get home to a more normal life after being on the road for a couple years, and seeing the loved ones again, after a long time being separated far away."
  • The '80s teen movie-inspired video was directed by Lance Drake, who also filmed Muse's visuals for "Dig Down" and "Thought Contagion." The futuristic clip starts off with Matt Bellamy being pursued in his sports car by police officers portrayed by his bandmates Chris Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard. They appear to chase their frontman into another dimension and he eventually turns into a Werewolf.

Bellamy said: "Life on the road can bring out your inner beast, this song and video is about taming that beast, desiring a return to something human. Plus, Teen Wolf is cool."

Lance Drake added: "Our aim with 'Something Human' was to continue the journey that began in 'Dig Down' and 'Thought Contagion.' Pulling further into a simulated world we follow Matt, Dom, and, Chris on the chase of a lifetime - where something as simple as returning some video tapes becomes an epic journey."
