Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats close their eponymous debut studio album on a hopeful note with this relatively laid-back cut. "Originally, I had it ending with a song called 'How to Make Friends,' Rateliff said. "The chorus is 'When everybody knows you, nobody's gonna want you.' (Laughs). But I replaced it with 'Mellow Out,' which is more of a release rather than a total bummer."
Until December 5, 1998, a song had to be issued as a single to make the Hot 100. Aaliyah's "Try Again" was the first tune to top the chart based on airplay alone, without any sales figures being included.
