Songfacts®:

  • This is the opening track and title track of Needtobreathe's ninth studio album, Caves. The album was written and demoed in two different phases in 2022; first in a rented house in Utah where the band finally reunited after the pandemic, and another on the road, re-acclimating to playing to huge crowds alongside OneRepublic.
  • Needtobreathe did this song in a rock and roll style in a minor key, differing from their usual Southern rock-esque material.

"I think the idea was kind of like this house in Utah felt like a cave, but all these sort of experiences where we go away for a while," lead singer Bear Rinehart told Music Mayhem. "It seems like to me the job of an artist is to kind of live in that subconscious place a little bit more than most people. It's like most people want those negative things or heavy things or whatever it is, you want to move on as quickly as you can. I think artists and writers, it's our job to kind of sift through that a little bit."
  • Rinehart and Needtobreathe keyboardist Josh Lovelace co-wrote the song with Nashville chill-pop singer-songwriter Mokita after performing a show with One Republic. They penned it in a hotel room with just an acoustic guitar and mini keyboard. "So you do not want to be in a hotel room next to Needtobreathe," joked bassist Seth Bolt. "It's loud."
  • Needtobreathe completed Caves at Pachyderm Studios in Minnesota with producer Jason Cooley. Ohio producer Cooley is also known for his work with Ben Rector (Brand New) and Ingrid Michaelson (Lights Out and It Doesn't Have to Make Sense).
