Songfacts®:

  • N.E.R.D are Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of the production duo The Neptunes, plus their sometimes vocal partner and drummer Shay Haley. The trio recorded this song for the soundtrack of The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Hugo compared the tune to The Beatles' "Yellow Submarine." "We're trying not to think too much in a cartoon sense, but more just like a psychedelic, otherworldy type of thing," he told Variety. "If you want to draw a parallel, maybe think of what the Beatles did with 'Yellow Submarine.'"
  • This wasn't Pharrell first contribution to a family-friendly film. He also composed the score for Despicable Me 2, which included the hit single "Happy."
  • N.E.R.D crafted two other songs, "Patrick Star" and "Sandy Squirrel," for the SpongeBob Movie soundtrack.
