Songfacts®:

  • "Bones for the Crows" is Nickelback's battle anthem, originally released in connection with the 2023 action role playing video game Dungeon Hunter 6. The song imagines a united fighting force advancing against its enemies. Its opening declaration, "We stand united, one for all. Unbeaten, unbroken," establishes solidarity, while the destruction of castles and towers gives the song a fantasy battle setting consistent with its video game origins.
  • The title comes from the line "We'll leave their bones for the crows." The defeated enemy will be left behind for scavenging birds, a satisfyingly grim image of total victory.
  • Originally used in Dungeon Hunter 6 advertising and promotional material in 2023, "Bones for the Crows" received an official digital single release on March 20, 2026 after WWE selected it as a theme for WrestleMania 42, held on April 18 and 19, 2026. The connection came through Nickelback's manager, who has a good relationship with the wrestling organization. He sent WWE the finished song, and the company wanted to use it straight away.

Nickelback were initially reluctant. Their Everything Under The Sun album was still unfinished, and "Bones for the Crows" was not the track they had planned to lead with. Kroeger told Audacy that WWE made a persuasive argument regarding exposure: "We're gonna promote the hell out of it so just give us the tune."

It is difficult to argue with that sort of marketing proposal when the alternative is to release a song and hope somebody happens to notice it.
  • When Canadian rock radio began picking up the track, Nickelback's longtime lawyer offered to help turn the unexpected interest into something more substantial: "I'll just get on the phone," he said. "I'm just gonna start calling program directors across the country and I'm just gonna see if I can do something with this song."

The lawyer subsequently emailed the band to tell them the song was about to reach the top of the chart the following week. "It wasn't even supposed to be a single," Kroeger told Audacy. "We were just like, 'Dude, that's insane.'"

The song did indeed become a #1 hit on Canadian rock radio and topped Billboard's US Hard Digital Song Sales, Alternative Digital Song Sales, and Rock Digital Song Sales charts. A track originally written for a video game had found its way into a major wrestling event and then onto radio, with the band themselves among the most surprised observers.
  • Kroeger wrote "Bones for the Crows" and co-produced it with Chris Baseford, Nickelback's producer and engineer since their 2014 album No Fixed Address.
  • "Bones for the Crows" appears as Track 2 on Everything Under The Sun, following "Rattle The Cage." The two songs share the language of a collective battle cry: "Bones for the Crows" opens with "We stand united, one for all," while "Rattle the Cage" also invokes "one for all" and a "battle call." Both tracks present the band's world as a place where solidarity is essential.
