Songfacts®:

  • Orange County, California native Nicky Youre became interested in music through his guitar-playing older brother. After four years of making his own music in his bedroom, Youre released his debut single, "Sex And Lemonade," in June 2021. It garnered plenty of attention, amassing over 1 million Spotify streams. This feel-good track is his second single.
  • In this free-feeling summer bop, Youre sings of driving down the California freeway at night. He's got the sunroof down, the radio on, and his new love interest by his side. Life couldn't be any better.
  • Youre is the sole songwriter. He set out to write a tune that captures "the feeling of excitement you get when you meet someone that you can't stop thinking about." He wanted it to be fun and energetic but still easy to listen to.

"When I meet someone like this, the thought of them is like an itch in my brain that I can't scratch," he added. "So I wanted the song to be catchy so it sticks in your head just like when you're stuck thinking about someone."
  • Singer-songwriter/producer Dazy produced the track. The two followed each other on Instagram and Youre DM'd Dazy and sent him the song's lyrics and melody. He also gave him a list of musical touchstones including Tai Verdes "A-O-K" and Benee's "Supalonely" for the song's sonics.

"I wanted the guitars to sound super-full and bright - that was something we talked about," Dazy told Billboard. "That was a new lane for me to try in terms of making pop music. I had mostly done a lot of electronic stuff."
  • After releasing "Sunroof" on November 26, 2021, it became a viral sensation on TikTok, catapulting the track into the Hot 100. British TikTokkers especially liked the track. "Sunroof" topped the list of most popular songs on the platform in the UK.
  • Nicky Youre penned the song in spring 2021 while studying international business at the University of California in San Diego. He enjoyed the student life but wrote the song on a bad night when he was feeling sick. Youre wanted to return to that feel-good feeling he had in his senior year. "So I wrote this song," he told Billboard, "and then 30 minutes into writing, I was [singing], 'I got my head out the sunroof!' And I was like, 'Whoa, that's kind of sick. A sunroof.'"
  • "Sunroof" plays in the 2025 film Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie, during a road trip montage sequence with Gabby and Grandma Gigi.
