Songfacts®:

  • "Call Your Mom" is an emotionally charged ballad where Noah Kahen extends unwavering support to somebody grappling with mental health challenges. We assume the subject is a girl, as Kahan refers to the person as "dear."
  • From the get-go, it's clear the girl is battling through some heavy times, perhaps even suicidal. But the singer won't just look away; he's in it for the long haul, refusing to let her drown in the darkness of depression. Reassurance is the name of the game: the lights might be dim now, but there's hope even if she can't see it. With some effort, they can blaze again.

Kahan isn't just about feelings; he's on a mission to practically lift this person out of her gloom. He burns the midnight oil on the phone and promises to reach out to her mom. Kahan's not the lone ranger caring for this soul - there are other people who care about the person and he wants to find any way to help her.
  • "Call Your Mom" is one of seven previously unreleased tracks included on a deluxe version of Kahan's third album, Stick Season. Titled Stick Season (We'll All Be Here Forever), the record was released on June 9, 2023, through Republic Records.
  • Kahan hinted he wrote the song about a real-life situation when he tweeted days after the album's release. "For those asking about 'Call Your Mom' live just know that it is difficult for me to perform that one live every night. I'm hoping I learn to perform it with more composure but for now it's very much a work in progress."
  • Kahan co-wrote the song with Todd Clark, with whom he's collaborated since his 2019 debut album, Busyhead. He co-produced the track with his regular producing collaborator, Gabe Simon.
  • Noah Kahan teamed up with American singer-songwriter Lizzy McAlpine to release a new version of "Call Your Mom" on September 15, 2023, during National Suicide Prevention Week. The duo first performed the song during Noah Kahan's show at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre on August 11, 2023.
