Songfacts®:

  • On the face of it, this soft rocker appears to be about a tumultuous relationship, as Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar Þórhallsson liken their union to a "cruel war." There are times when they are getting on, but the two singers admit to being "careless" and "wicked," causing conflict between the couple.

When the animated video was released, the press release gave an alternative meaning. It said: "'Wars' is about the 'war' between your conscious and your subconscious and the video captures what it's like to be pulled between those two worlds."
  • The trippy music video was created by the creative duo WeWereMonkey, who also produced the visuals for the band's singles "Little Talks" and "King and Lionheart." The animated clip shows the band members being cooked inside the skull of a monster.

"The visuals for our album Fever Dream are inspired by other-worldly, dreamy, horror-[esque] themes," Of Monsters and Men explained. "For the 'Wars' video we wanted to continually build on those themes while also keeping it carefree and fun."
