This was written and recorded by OneRepublic for the soundtrack of The Giver movie. The Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep-starring motion picture is based on Lois Lowry's 1993 American children's novel set in a seemingly perfect community.
OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder said that writing a track for the movie was a personal project. "The Giver is a favorite book of ours and we're all incredibly thrilled to see it brought to the big screen," he said. "It's a huge honor to contribute our music to a movie that's not only an amazing story, but also has a cast of actors that we admire so much, like Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep."
"Abracadabra" was inspired by Diana Ross and The Supremes. Steve Miller first met the girl group when they performed together on NBC's Hullabaloo in 1966, and he wrote the lyrics after spotting Diana Ross skiing in the mountains years later.
Movie director Michel Gondry played live drums on the Late Registration track, "Diamonds From Sierra Leone." The Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind filmmaker happened to be in the studio on a day when producer Jon Brion was setting up a drum kit
