Songfacts®:

  • OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder came up with this plea for unity in the middle of the COVID pandemic. He told the BBC it's basically him talking about being in a relationship. "Sometimes it sucks, and sometimes it's the highest of highs - but if we can agree on one thing, it's that I'll take care of you, and you take care of me too," he said. "So it's not necessarily about romantic love. It could be friendship, it could be family. And you know me, I'm a sucker for a big, universal sing-along chorus, so that's a song anyone could sing about anyone they care about."
  • Tedder wrote the song with:

His go-to songwriting partner, One Republic bass player Brent Kutzle.

    OneRepublic drummer Eddie Fisher.

Montreal-based producer and songwriter John Nathaniel, who has credits on eight out of Human's 12 tracks.

Songwriter and producer Tyler Spre co-produced the song with Tedder, Nathaniel and Kutzie. He worked on 10 of Human's tracks.
  • When writing "Take Care Of You," Tedder wanted to encapsulate a song that he and his wife Genvieve especially love: Ray LaMontagne's 2004 track "Shelter." He told the UK newspaper The Sun: "The theme of the song is: 'I will shelter you, and you will shelter me.' 'Take Care Of You' reinterprets that theme in a more modern way."
