Songfacts®:

  • This was the debut single for the English pop/soul singer and actress Paloma Faith. The theme of the song is the predicament of appearing to be one thing and actually being quite another.
  • The video was directed by Sophie Muller, (No Doubt, Beyonce, Leona Lewis, Duffy, Kings of Leon).
  • Faith told Q July 2009 about the Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful album: "My vocal style suits the subject matter of my album. It's about the human condition, the constant striving for love and companionship. I've thrown my heart at many a wrong man in my time, I can't tell you. I'm the queen of tragedy. Melancholy informs everything I do."

  • Mizi from SlI don't think the lyrics are right. I'm pretty sure it's 190 miles an hour and that she talking about flipping someone the bird, not "affecting the birds".
  • Elissa from Indianapolis, InThis song is ASSUME. I remember going to bars and hearing this song play. I lived here about 20 years ago. I moved back just recently, and I have not heard this song since I left Indy in 1991. It was great! to hear it today and I hope you play it more often.
  • Runcil from Mumbai, IndiaA very melodious song. Something different from the other stuff thrown at us.
