Songfacts®:

  • This is the second single from Vices & Virtues, the third studio album from alternative rock band Panic! At the Disco and their first as a duo. The departure of singer Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Walker left a hole in the Panic! songwriting regime as Ross had been the principal lyricist. The experience became the catalyst for multi-instrumentalist Brendon Urie finding his own voice and the confidence to take over as the band's principal songsmith. As he wrote, Urie started noticing trends in his lyrics. "They dealt with self-deprecation, pride, subversion, manipulation, but some good stuff too: self-expression, honesty," he told Spin magazine. "I was like, 'Are these the seven deadly sins or something'? [laughs]. We did some research and 'Vices and Virtues' popped up. Aristotle has this Biblical list that's tied in with themes of human behavior that we've been noticing in ourselves. This album is our study of our human behavior. It's about our changes growing up."
