Songfacts®:

  • Patti LaBelle recorded this song for her self-titled debut solo album. It marked her first solo venture after being a part of the group Labelle for many years. The album was produced by David Rubinson, who also helmed Labelle's 1976 LP Chameleon.
  • "I Think About You" is a song about the power of love and the way it can make us feel. The lyrics describe the physical and emotional sensations that come with being in love, and how those sensations can be so overwhelming, we can't help but think about the person we adore.
  • Leo Nocentelli wrote "I Think About You." He is a guitarist and songwriter best known as a founding member of the funk band The Meters.

"I had been invited to play guitar by the producer David Rubinson, who was recording the album at The Automatt studios in San Francisco," Nocentelli recalled to Uncut magazine. "He also asked me if I had any material. I'd written this song called 'I Think About You.' I had the chords and the melody. I wrote the lyrics on the plane up to San Francisco."
  • When they came to record the song, Nocentelli played it on the piano as well as guitar. "I'm not a piano player at all, but I could play these gospel chords in 6/8," he told Uncut. "And for some reason, Patti's musical director, James Ellison, he tried to play what I was playing in the studio but it didn't feel right, he couldn't get the feel. So, he asked me to play the piano. So, I get a credit as the piano player! I think it's my only one."
  • The other musicians are:

    Ray Parker Jr.: guitars
    George Porter Jr.: bass
    James Gadson: drums
    Cecil Womack: backing vocals
    Curtis Womack: backing vocals
    Friendly Womack, Jr: backing vocals
