Songfacts®:

  • This song about the Massachusetts vacation haven was penned by Claire Rothrock, Milton Yakus, and Allan Jeffrey in 1957 and was a hit for Patti Page the same year. The singer had never been to the Cape when she recorded this song, but she's visited the peninsular many times since to perform and for vacations.
  • A sample of this recording formed the basis of Groove Armada's 1998 UK chill out hit "At the River," in which the lines "If you're fond of sand dunes and salty air, / Quaint little villages here and there..." are repeated over and over.
  • Other artists who have covered this song include Bette Midler, Michael Holliday and Anne Murray.
  • The song appears on the soundtrack of the 1990 movie Die Hard.
