Songfacts®:

  • McCartney wrote this song for a short film that he and his wife Linda worked on called Rupert and the Frog Song, which was based on the character from the British children's show Rupert Bear. In the film, Rupert wanders into a cave after following his stray kite. He comes across a lake filled with frogs and he hides to watch as they all start singing. At the climax of the song, the queen frog comes up from under the water, rather majestically, on her very own lily pad. >>

  • Rupert Bear began as a comic strip, and was turned into a TV series that ran in England from 1970-1974 and again 1985-1988, and was also the subject of a series of books. McCartney's song was inspired by his realization that his children adored the Rupert character as much as he did.
  • This song first appeared on McCartney's 1983 album Pipes of Peace, and was issued as a single in 1984, credited to Paul McCartney and the Frog Chorus, when the film was released. The project was a huge success, as the song was a UK hit and the film sold very well on video and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Music Video - Short Form.
  • The children's chorus, which was credited as "The Frog Chorus," was made up of members of the St. Paul's Choir and the King's Singers. The B-side of the single was a humming version of the song credited to the Finchley Frogettes.
  • Beatles producer George Martin produced the song with their longtime associate Geoff Emerick as the engineer.
