Songfacts®:

  • Many of Paul Overstreet's songs deal with family. In this one, he takes the perspective of a son whose father would often go out drinking while his wife took care of the kids. He gets away with it until one night when he comes home and finds the locks have changed. Instead of putting up a fuss, he comes around to mama's way of thinking and starts spending more time at home instead of the local bar. He realizes he's got a good thing going with his family, and doesn't want to lose it.
  • Overstreet wrote this song with Don Schlitz, with whom he wrote the Randy Travis hit "Forever And Ever, Amen" and the song "When You Say Nothing At All," recorded first by Keith Whitley, then later by Alison Krauss and Ronan Keating. Overstreet found success as a songwriter before he branched out as a solo artist with his 1989 album Sowin' Love. "Daddy's Come Around" is on his next album, Heroes.
  • In real life, Overstreet's parents got a divorce after his dad didn't come home one night. Paul went on to raise six kids who inspired many of his fatherhood songs.
  • This song went to #1 on the Country chart, making Overstreet one of the few who has had #1 Country hits as a solo artist, with a group, and as a writer for others. Several of his songs have topped the chart for other artists, including "On the Other Hand" and "Diggin' Up Bones" for Randy Travis. With the group S-K-O, he landed a #1 with "Baby's Got a New Baby."
