Songfacts®:

  • "Lil Boo Thang" is a feel-good funk-pop song that unfolds the tale of unapologetic attraction. The track's chorus and verses orbit Paul Russell's infatuation as he yearns for romance even as the other's heart is spoken for.

"First and foremost, 'Lil Boo Thang' is meant to be a good time," Russell told Billboard. "When I wrote it, I was stressed out on a Thursday afternoon, so I just turned on some of the music that makes me happy and imagined that I was celebrating something. I think what makes the song special is the fact that so many of us are ready to just forget about whatever is happening around us and enjoy the good things in life – not just thinking back to good times in the past but creating new ones in the present day."
  • Russell interpolates "Best Of My Love" by The Emotions in the bridge. He also samples the instrumentation throughout.
  • Russell first teased a snippet of the song on June 28, 2023, in a TikTok post. In the clip, he dances round a room clutching a microphone and lip-syncs his lyrics while the camera spins around him. This initial post garnered more than 5 million views. Russell later repurposed the post on Instagram Reels, where it generated another 10 million views. The virality landed Russell a record deal with Arista Records. They released the song on August 18, 2023.
  • Russell wrote "Lil Boo Thang" himself. "The Best Of My Love" writers, Al McKay and Maurice White, also get writing credits. Sean Cook produced the track.
