Songfacts®:

  • The majority of the songs on Midnight Souvenirs, including this one, were co-written by Wolf and Oscar winner Will Jennings, whose CV also includes Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven," Steve Winwood's "Higher Love," and Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warens duet "Up Where We Belong."
  • This is a duet with Country legend Merle Haggard. Wolf told The Boston Globe about the collaboration: "We spent some time together on his bus, hanging out. Then, when Will and I finished 'It's Too Late For Me,' I thought it had such a quality to it, a tradition to it, that I thought perhaps Merle might be interested in contributing to it. He first thought it was a Lefty Frizell song, which is a great compliment. Then his piano player told me Merle loves that song so much he's planning on recording it. I said, 'No, no, no, I wanna do a duet with him.' Finally, we were able to get to it and do it. It's one of my prize moments. Pick several moments in my career that are important, sitting next to Merle singing was one of them."
  • Midnight Souvenirs debuted at #45 on the Billboard 200. It was Wolf's highest-charting album on the chart since his 1984 release Lights Out peaked at #24. By a strange quirk of fate on his first week on the chart Wolf ranked between the soundtrack The Twilight Saga: New Moon at #46 and Dr. Dog's seventh album at #44.
