Songfacts®:

  • The song is titled after the infamous Magnolia Projects in New Orleans. The crime-infested housing project and neighborhood is known for various murders and a high level of drug dealing and being the home of southern rappers such as Birdman, Juvenile and the late Soulja Slim.
  • The carefree rap anthem features the usual braggadocio rhymes about drug dealing and women

In New York I Milly Rock
    Hide it in my sock
    Used to sell rerock
    Running from the cops
    Shooting at the opps.

Carti is referencing 2 Milly's 2015 anthem for his squad's signature dance move. "Milly Rock." The "rock" in "Milly Rock" is a play on words also referencing the slang term for crack cocaine, which the Atlanta rapper is hiding in his "sock" before selling it.
  • The beat was supplied by Queens, New York-based producer Pierre Bourne, who regularly supplies Carti's instrumentations. In line with its geographical inspiration, Bourne gives the song a woozy New Orleans bounce soundscape.
  • Pierre Bourne's tag, which can be heard at the beginning of the song is "Yo Pierre, you wanna come out here?" It is sampled dialogue from the opening scene of the fourth episode of '90s sitcom The Jamie Foxx Show.
