Songfacts®:

  • Rachel Platten married her lawyer husband Kevin Lazan in a Jewish ceremony in 2010. Eight years later, the singer announced they were expecting their first child. She penned this emotional song in celebration, imagining what the baby would look like.

"It was a prelude letter to this person I hadn't met yet," Platten explained to Today. "Sometimes songs take effort, but this one felt easy to write. It took me about 45 minutes, which is unheard of for me."

Platten gave birth to their daughter Violet Skye Lazan on January 26, 2019.
  • Encouraged by the response to the song, Platten wrote a picture book telling children and their parents everywhere "You Belong." Released on March 31, 2020, it is a collection of illustrations of mothers with their children by Marcin Piwowarski, accompanied by this song's lyrics. Said Platten, "I hope parents and kiddos alike will feel this same message of inclusion and the warmth of unconditional love through these words."
