Songfacts®:

  • Reba McEntire launched her career with the single "I Don't Want to Be a One-Night Stand" in January 1976. She sings of her desire for a deeper connection, not just a casual fling.
  • Layng Martine Jr. penned the song. Despite his impressive resumé - he wrote hits for Elvis Presley ("Way Down"), The Pointer Sisters ("Should I Do It") and Trisha Yearwood ("I Wanna Go Too Far") - the song stalled at #88 on the Country chart.

"I didn't do very well on my very first one," McEntire noted to Billboard in 2019. "If I had started my career today and it went like it did in '76, I would be home washing dishes, singing in the shower."
  • Notwithstanding this initial setback, McEntire's talent and determination paid off in the 1980s. Songs like "(You Lift Me) Up to Heaven" and "I'm Not That Lonely Yet" cracked the Top 10, and by 1982, she'd secured her first #1 with "Can't Even Get the Blues" from her fifth album.
