Red Light Company Frontman Richard Frenneaux told Clash Magazine that this song was written when he first met his girlfriend Anna. He explained: "I was living out of a different hotel every night and it was a really significant point in both my life, and my writing. There was a lot of references of finding a new infatuation while losing something from the past."
Angus Young created the distinctive opening guitar part for "Thuderstruck" by playing with all the strings taped up, except the B. He learned the studio trick from his older brother George Young, who was the rhythm guitarist for The Easybeats.
