This song is about Brivs Mekis, a man who built a wall in his house. He would live on one side for a while, then switch to the other when he got bored. When he died, they found a huge pile of books in his closet that he wrote and had published. The book was titled Life And How To Live It.

Peter Buck on why they chose Mekis for a song subject: "One of the things Michael was writing about in Fables was the small-town character thing, so that was a reflection on who this guy was. It fit the storytelling mode of Fables." (Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982-2011)
