Songfacts®:

  • In December 2013 FIFA and Sony Music Entertainment launched a worldwide music contest inviting submissions for an original song to be recorded by Ricky Martin for the official World Cup album. The winning entry was submitted by Elijah King, a Miami-based singer/songwriter who shares a Puerto Rican heritage with Martin.
  • The bilingual English and Spanish-language tune was produced and arranged by Salaam Remi (The Fugees, Amy Winehouse and Nas). It was released as the second official single from One Love, One Rhythm – The 2014 FIFA World Cup Official Album.
  • The song title "Vida" translates into English as "Life." The lyrics are indeed a celebration of life.
  • Martin previously recorded "La Copa de la Vida (The Cup of Life)", which served as the Official Song of the 1998 FIFA World Cup. It was the track that made the Puerto Rican an international star, taking off after he performed it on the 1999 Grammy Awards.
