Songfacts®:

  • A track from Rissi Palmer's debut album, at the time she would often write songs about her failed relationships, Taylor Swift style. Regarding "Hurt Don't Know When to Quit," she said: "I was in a relationship off and on for five years, and toward the end of those five years he issued me an ultimatum. He said, "You either be my wife and be home, or be a singer." She chose the later option.

According to Palmer, the guy ended up marrying someone else six months later, but she found out they were getting a divorce.
  • Palmer left her label and didn't issue another album until 2013. By this time, she was married and had her daughter, Grace. This changed the complexion of her songwriting, as she was no longer writing about relationship struggles but on family and blessings.
  • In our 2015 interview with Palmer, we asked what it is like performing this song many years later. "It feels like another life, another person," she said. "The good thing is that when I start singing it, I remember how bad felt at that time and can go back there... luckily just for three minutes!"
  • Palmer wrote this with the Nashville mainstays Shaye Smith and Ed Hill.
