Songfacts®:

  • Russ wrote this song for his first girlfriend, whom he neglected, cheated on and pushed it away. He was 17-18 at the time and she was crazy in love with him. Because of the way he treated her, she now finds it hard to give her love and trust to another man. Russ expressed his motive for creating the song in a tweet explaining:

"I'm tryna to empathize that I understand why she's fighting her feelings."
  • During the second verse Russ sings about her ex's new boyfriend who is treating her better than he did. However, despite his good intentions, she still finds herself batting an internal conflict because of the hurt she feels. Russ explained in a Genius attribution:

"I think a lot of people have dealt with that. You have all these trust issues and all this baggage but it's like you can't f--k with this person. I was the dude trying to tell the girl, 'Yo, I'm not going to be the last one.' It's f---ed up cause it's all like a rollercoaster of s--t.
  • The song's music video was directed by Edgar Estevez, who has worked with Russ on the majority of his clips including the one for "What They Want." In August 2016, the Polish media reported that the visual bore a striking resemblance to one directed by Filip Zaluska for Polish electronic music group RYSY's song "The Fib". Both videos feature a distraught girl crying in her car because of a break-up while their ex boyfriends are seen wandering around a parking garage. The creators of Russ' clip were unsurprisingly accused of plagiarism and a lawsuit ensued.
