Songfacts®:

  • "Came The Closest" is a soul-searching, introspective song where Sam Hunt dives deep into the ups and downs of love with raw, diary-like lyrics. It tells the story of a guy who tries on a life of the straight and narrow but reverts back to his true self, drinking whiskey, sleeping in, and growing his hair out. It's addressed to the girl who tried to tame him and almost succeeded, letting her know he'll never transform into that church-going, responsible type her mama loves, but she came the closest.
  • The character in this song is a lot like Sam Hunt, but Sam did settle down. By the time this song was released, he had been married for six years.
  • Hunt co-wrote the song with his regular collaborators Shane McAnally, and Josh Osborne, and his producer Zac Crowell. Hunt posted an acoustic demo to Instagram on June 24, 2021, so it's likely they wrote it during their early 2021 writer's retreat in Florida. He released the song as a single on October 20, 2023.
