Songfacts®:

  • This song was written on stage during a gig. Vocalist Jehnny Beth explained to Pitchfork: "'I Need Something New' started as something I was just reciting onstage, so there was no music at the beginning. And we really needed something; we were repeating the same things live and it felt we needed to incorporate something else."

"So I was doing that, and then Gemma and Fay started to improvise, and then Ayse joined in, and it became a song. It was absolutely written onstage, and I think you can feel it, because it has this freedom, if I daresay that word. It has that lightness."
