Songfacts®:

  • This is a down-tempo love song where Sia addresses her beau. Her "snowman" is having a meltdown, and she fears his love for her is evaporating. Sia assures her man she will always be at his side. The singer urges him to come away with her to a place where the sun won't melt him anymore.
  • Sia released "Snowman" on November 9, 2017 as a promotional single from her holiday Everyday Is Christmas album. It didn't catch on until December 2020, when the song went viral on TikTok as part of the Snowman Challenge, where users attempt to sing an entire verse in one breath.
  • Following its rise in popularity, the track entered the singles charts in Australia, Canada and many European countries. It reached #1 on the Finnish Singles Chart, Sia's first visit to the summit in that territory.
  • Because of its popularity on TikTok, Sia released a Snowed In & Slowed Down TikTok Remix, which replicates the sound users had been using on the video-sharing app.
  • Sia performed "Snowman" on the December 13, 2017 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, accompanied by teenage dancer Maddie Ziegler. Sia's history with her dancing avatar goes back to her 2014 "Chandelier" music video.
  • Sia wrote the piano-driven song with the track's producer, Greg Kurstin. The American's other collaborations with the Australian singer-songwriter include "Chandelier," her first US #1 hit "Cheap Thrills," and her collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, "The Greatest."
  • On Sia's 2008 track "The Girl You Lost to Cocaine," she dubs a girlfriend with addiction issues a "snowman."

But I've watched you stand, still as a snowman
But I don't see you change, you're always at meltdown

In this instance, Sia walks away from her troubled friend, as she'd grown tired of the friend using her as a crutch.
