Songfacts®:

  • In this swirling, atmospheric song, Soccer Mommy (Sophie Allison) confronts a feeling of ennui and doom, wondering if a dream is just a lie you wish would come true.

"The whole point of the chorus is basically, 'Is hope worth it, or is it silly? Is hoping for better enough, or is it just a lie you tell yourself?' It's that battle," she told Rolling Stone. "I was trying to create this fictional, apocalyptic world, but you could obviously compare it to the real world."
  • As you probably guessed, the title is a working title that stuck. When Soccer Mommy started working on the song, she had to save the file but couldn't think of a title, so she labeled it "newdemo." She never did think up a name so she went with it.
  • This song fits the theme of Soccer Mommy's third album, Sometimes, Forever, which is that both highs and lows are transient, and oftentimes things happen without explanation. Many of the emotions she felt as she tried to understand the world around her made their way into these songs.
