Songfacts®:

  • Sons of the Sea is a collaboration between Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd and producer Brendan O'Brien, who has manned the boards on several Incubus albums. Boyd penned lyrics for the project and sang while O'Brien wrote and played most of the music. The singer told Noisecreep: "[We were] two artists who had worked together before, but now in a completely different context. Every song we worked on was different from the next one. It was a process of continual discovery."
  • O'Brien was caught off guard a little bit with this song's subject matter. Boyd recalled to Noisecreep: "(He) was like, 'Can we do more songs like this? What's it about?' I'm like, 'It's about sex, it's about sex.' (laughs)."
  • Boyd used a specific film reference from his youth as a muse for the song. He told Fuse TV it was,"the scene in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High where Phoebe Cates comes out of the pool in slow motion, water spraying everywhere, and she undoes her bikini top to show the world the glory."
