This song was originally recorded by Cher and released as a single in 1979. It became the American singer's first Top Ten single in her home country in five years, peaking at #8.
In 2001 Sophie Ellis-Bextor released a slightly re-written version as the lead single from her Read My Lips album. It was an instant hit, going straight to #2 in the UK Singles Chart. Cher however complained about the raunchy new lyrics.
This was the first solo release for Ellis-Bextor, who had previously enjoyed some success as the voice of TheAudience and Spiller. She is also the daughter of former Blue Peter presenter Janet Ellis.
This is the first of many Ellis-Bextor videos directed by Sophie Muller. The fashion-centric clip has the singer trying on various high-couture outfits.
