Songfacts®:

  • Spinal Tap often open their concerts with this song. It's about how they're going to rock the audience... tonight.

The group went through a psychedelic phase in the '60s when they recorded "(Listen to the) Flower People," and they made some moody, mystical metal with "Stonehenge," but "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight" is much more straightforward.
  • This song appears in the video game Guitar Hero II. If you can rock your way through it, you'll get to see their drummer explode in the end. This is a reference to the many drummers who met their demise with the group over the years, including by explosion.
  • This and other Tap tracks were written by the guys who portray the band in the 1984 movie This Is Spinal Tap - Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest - along with the film's director, Rob Reiner.

  • Thomas from Mannum, Australia"You're too young & I'm too well hung, but tonight I'm gonna rock you ... "

What a line! You seriously couldn't get away with writing that today, even for a spoof film like Spinal Tap.
  • Diana from New Orleans, La-Agrees with Jeef about mental capacity of guitar hero players-
  • Jeff from Austin, TxWow!! cool! this song is on Guitar Hero!! Otherwise who would have ever known about it???
Seriously, this is an awesome song! guitar hero and those who play it are retarded.
  • Christopher from Glasgow, ScotlandThis song is about young groupies who the band is going to have sex with after the show. Tonight they'll be in another town but tonight they're going to rock them.
  • Thomas from Rocherster, Nyahha. i love it in guitar hero when the drummer spontaneously combusts after finishing the song.
