  • Cashed out in the front room
    Ashes stain his lips
    Lucifer on the sofa
    Staring at you

Lead singer Britt Daniel wrote this song while locked down in Austin, Texas, during the pandemic. The lyrics came thick and fast, and initially the Spoon frontman was unsure where the "Lucifer on the sofa" line came from. When the dust settled, it became clear the lyric was simply a metaphor for when he's at his lowest.

"It's the worst that you can be, that you can face in times of stress," he explained to Apple Music. "It's a part of yourself you have to deal with. It's a representation of bitterness or loneliness, and it's that thing that can keep you on the couch and maybe doing nothing for a week, self-indulging."
  • The complete song is about the battle between yourself and that downbeaten character you can become. "That conflict, in this case," Daniel explained, "is played out through a long night in the troubles, downtown Austin, all alone."
  • This is the title track of Spoon's 10th studio album. Britt Daniel told the UK newspaper The Sun: "Every album needs a great title and Lucifer on the Sofa is this one's."
  • "Lucifer On The Sofa" is the sole track on the album recorded with Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips), who co-produced the previous two Spoon records. Spoon began laying down parts for the tune in Austin during December 2020 and sent them to Fridmann, who produced, mixed and engineered the song remotely from his Tarbox Road studio in Fredonia, New York. He also contributed keyboards to the track.
  • Apart from Spoon and Fridmann, the other musicians are Los Angeles-based musician Ted Taforo (saxophone) and singer-songwriter Caroline Rose (backing vocals). A two-time recipient of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award, Tafaro is renowned for his powerful saxophone sound. Rose is best known for their 2020 hit "Feel The Way I Want," which reached #21 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs (Rose uses she/they pronouns).
  • After Texas native Brit Daniel moved from LA back to Austin in late 2019, the band immediately started laying down tracks at drummer Jim Eno's Public Hi-Fi studio. "The idea this time was to record in a proper city, where we could soak pop music and energy," Daniel recalled to Uncut magazine. "And it worked amazingly for the first four months or so, and then of course, there was sadly none of that. Though there was still an energy in Austin during lockdown; that's the vibe I was feeling when I wrote the song 'Lucifer On The Sofa.'"
