Songfacts®:

  • St. Louis, a British singer who has worked as a writer or producer with the likes of Karen Harding and The Dap Kings, brings his hopeless romantic vibe to "Debut." He told Songfacts the story behind it:

"The song was originally conceived in a writing session back in 2018 with my friends Marli Harwood and Jamie Haj. I had recently fallen for someone and needed to write about love at first sight, but I wanted to describe the feeling in a more abstract way, and the title 'Debut' came to us as we were discussing this concept.

The lyric developed over time from being a simple 'love at first sight' concept and evolved to harbor much darker undertones of obsession and limerence. I leaned more into the psychology of someone who's willing to do anything for a person they barely know based on their initial impression of them. In this case, a man falling blindly in love for a woman performing on stage.

As the lyric develops, the audience is wisened to the fact that the singer is manifesting an imaginary relationship with the woman before him. The second verse croons, 'reading signs in every line waiting for her eyes to fall on mine,' which outlines this fallacy. A situation I feel every fan has experienced when watching their favorite artist or performer onstage.

The audience is further enlightened to the delusions of St. Louis as the bridge sings, 'the whole world's watching waiting now, I know you see me in the crowd.' Followed by the heart-wrenching ad-libs and vocal acrobatics, expressing the desperation and lust felt by St. Louis for a woman he thinks he's in love with."
  • The music video, directed by Andy James Taylor, finds St. Louis and his crew performing the song in front of a blood-red background. The enchantress is played by the R&B singer Kara Marni.
