Songfacts®:

  • This song tells the story of a mother who takes off, leaving the father to raise their little girl. When that girl gets older, she leaves home, hitting the road just like her mother did.

In a Songfacts interview with Stephen Bishop, he explained: "I'd been working on it for some time, writing it. I wanted to write a song about a family, because really if you think about it, there are so many songs about love, but not so many songs about family. The last family song that I can remember is "Family Affair" by Sly Stone. So, it kind of stick out in the crowd.

I like to write songs about people who are going through issues or whatever, and I find myself writing not as much about personal stuff."
  • Bishop wrote this song with Robin Lerner, who co-wrote the Tim McGraw song "She's My Kind Of Rain" and the Faith Hill hit "This Kiss."
