Songfacts®:

  • "Evangeline" is a love song where Stephen Sanchez is completely smitten by the titular girl.

    Anybody call the doctor
I'm a thousand degrees in love

Sanchez acknowledges that Evangeline may not be as eager to fall in love as he is. He promotes himself by promising her comfort if she fully gives him her heart.

So, don't go to sleep, don't rest your head
I'll be the pillow and I'll be the bed
Holding your dreams as you lie to rest

In the second verse, Sanchez is frustrated with the state of play between them.

    If you're so in love
    Honey, why stay refused?
  • "Evangeline" marks Sanchez's first solo release since his debut EP, Easy on My Eyes, which featured his '50s-inspired breakthrough single "Until I Found You." The singer moves forward a decade with this song, which is built around a sample from Bobby Goldsboro's 1968 single "Honey."
  • The song was birthed when producer Nick Lobel put together a verse and chorus for Sanchez to hear in the studio that sampled the 10-second intro of "Honey." Sanchez had never used samples before or been inclined to do so, but once he heard it, he felt inspired. Together with Lobel and Trent Dabbs (Ingrid Michaelson's "Girls Chase Boys," Kacey Musgraves' "High Horse," NeedtoBreathe's "Banks") they bought the song to life in 15 minutes.

Nick Lobel's resumé includes work as an engineer on Sam Smith's The Thrill Of It All and Harry Styles' Harry's House albums.
  • Sanchez first performed the song on the January 24, 2023 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
