Songfacts®:

  • "Until The Sun Explodes" is a tribute from Jakob Nowell to his father, Sublime founding frontman Bradley Nowell. The senior Nowell died of a heroin overdose when Jakob was just a baby, but the son grew up listening to his dad's music. The line "lullaby in a loaded gun" summarizes the message, as Bradley's music soothed Jakob throughout his life while also acting as a constant reminder of the dangerous game his father played with drugs.
  • This is the title track off Sublime's fourth studio album, their first in 30 years. Their original frontman, Bradley Nowell, died in May 1996, and their album Sublime was released posthumously that July. The band re-formed in 2009 with new lead singer Rome Ramirez, but under the name "Sublime With Rome." They became Sublime again in 2024 when Jakob took over on vocals.
  • In putting the album together, Nowell and crew were obsessive in staying true to the Sublime sound. Along with touring guitarist Zane Vandevort and producer Jon Joseph, he created a detailed research report to isolate the Sublime sound and spirit.
  • The song was written by Jakob Nowell with original Sublime members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson, producer Jon Joseph, and guitarist Zane Vandevort.
  • The band debuted the song on Los Angeles' iconic radio station KROQ.
  • Jakob took efforts to make sure fans understood that he didn't want to replace his father or the original Sublime. On the band's Facebook page, he said he thought of the Until the Sun Explodes album as an epilogue to his father's legacy, not as a replacement, making the song "Until The Sun Explodes" an "epilogue to the epilogue."
