Songfacts®:

  • Dog Man Star was the last Suede album to feature guitarist Bernard Butler. Growing tensions between him and singer Brett Anderson ended with Butler leaving the band before the album was completed. This track finds Anderson singing about loneliness against the backdrop of wealth and fame. The Suede vocalist told NME January 25, 2014 that he finds it difficult to listen to this song without being reminded of the bleak period in their career that spawned it. "I'll always remember watching Bernard play this song's beautiful piano part from the control room," recalled Anderson, "and feeling this strange mixture of pride and trepidation."
  • Brett Anderson told Uncut magazine in 2016: "Dog Man Star is about disintegration, not being able to form relationships, and it's about my disintegrating relationship with Bernard. A song like The 2 Of Us is about how people can't communicate. It's also about what success does to you, how it distorts relationships and changes your life."

  • Ann Gordon from Toronto, OntarioI always thought this song was about Bernard and their horrible breakup. It affected Brett throughout his whole life in my opinon. Very sad. I think they are still very close though.
