In 2009, Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley's wife Avril Lavigne filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. Many of Screaming Bloody Murder's lyrics appear on the face of it to be about the Canadian couple's break-up. This song, for instance, finds Whibley lamenting, "What do I have to do, I was supposed to grow old with you, but that ain't gonna happen." One would think it would be a safe assumption that Whibley is singing about the end of his marriage. However, the singer told Jam! Music that he's not so sure. "I don't really remember writing a lot of them 'cause they came so quick and so fast just over a period of time that there was never really any thought put into them," said Whibley of the lyrics. "It was just whatever, 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there. So it's sort of hard to explain. I don't know what (the album) is about."
