Songfacts®:

  • "Disco" was released on June 12, 2019, as the lead single from Surf Curse's album Heaven Surrounds You. The band's drummer, Jacob Rubeck, wrote the song with their vocalist and guitarist, Nick Rattigan.
  • A disco ball of emotions, the song's lyrics shimmer with longing and attraction, reflecting the intoxicating depths of love. The song intertwines the vibrant imagery of disco with the introspective, heartfelt musings of the smitten singer.
  • The music video, directed by Nick Rattigan, takes this idea and runs with it. It shows a couple in their apartment, turning a quiet evening at home into their own private disco. There are streamers, balloons, and the kind of intimate, carefree dancing that makes you want to turn your living room into a nightclub.
  • Heaven Surrounds You marked a new chapter for Surf Curse. After growing up and starting their musical career in Reno, Nevada, Jacob Rubeck and Nick Rattigan relocated to Los Angeles, and the move clearly had an impact on the album. The record's 12 tracks were shaped both by their new environment and by the movies they were watching during this transitional period.

"It's kind of like taking in and embracing the experience of the film, and it somehow connects to our lives, or we just pick something up from it - like the emotional aspect of a scene," Rubeck explained to Paper magazine. "I brought the guitar riff for 'Disco' to Nick, and he wrote a song inspired by the movie Last Days of Disco, and the music video was a mixture of that movie and Hal Hartley dance scenes."
  • While "Disco" initially found its audience among the band's loyal fan base, it really took off in the summer of 2024 thanks to TikTok. A viral dance trend emerged, featuring couples twisting and grooving to the song's chorus, and before long, the song was everywhere.
  • This wasn't the first time Surf Curse had a TikTok-fueled surge. Back in 2020, their 2013 song "Freaks" became one of the platform's pandemic anthems.
