Songfacts®:

  • One of the themes of this song is how advanced technology is making us lazier. The lyrics, "If we're adding to the noise, turn off this song" reflect Switchfoot's desire to be more than the everyday clutter we are inundated with.

Back in 2003 when the song was released, there was no social media and no smartphones. The song got more profound as digital clutter multiplied.
  • The song is part of Switchfoot's fourth album, The Beautiful Letdown, released in 2003. Their first three albums were on independent labels and marketed to the Christian community. The Beautiful Letdown was their first with Columbia Records, which helped expand their reach to secular listeners.
  • This song was written by the brothers in Switchfoot: Jon and Tim Foreman. Tim says they wrote it while on tour, which can be a great time for reflection because there's a lot of travel and waiting around.

  • Jerry from Anaheim, CaHaha that helps. I never knew what it really meant even though i tried guessing.

I thought it was more like Christianity is bein blocked out as time passing and they were being all "If were bugging you (adding to the noise), don't erase our religion, just ignore us (Turn off this song)" but whatever.
It's an awesome song still. ^^
