Songfacts®:

  • "Astronaut" is a meditation on loneliness, alienation, and the universal search for meaning in a world that feels big enough to swallow us whole. The song captures a yearning to escape, much like an astronaut might, drifting into space and leaving earthly troubles far behind.

"Emotionally it's about this guy who doesn't feel he belongs here and wants to be an astronaut floating out into space," said the band's Curt Smith. "A lot of people identify with the emotion of that song, that sense of alienation."
  • "Astronaut" originated during the sessions for Tears for Fears' 2022 album The Tipping Point. The band rediscovered the track while working on new material for their first ever live LP, Songs for a Nervous Planet. The album comprises five studio songs and 18 live songs.

"Once we realized that we were going to end up doing more than just one new track for this album, (bandmate) Roland (Orzabal) sent me the original recording of 'Astronaut' and I had forgotten how good of a song it was, as it gives you a sense of release," Smith said.

"It's a horrible comparison but it's the sorbet in between courses where you just can have a little breath and just float away. Forgive the pun but that's the feeling the song has."
  • Smith co-wrote the song with the band's regular collaborator Charlton Pettus. A Los Angeles songwriter and producer, Pettus has worked with Tears for Fears since 2000, producing their more recent records and touring with the band. He has worked with a diverse range of artists, including Selena Gomez and Sinead O'Connor.
  • The music video, directed by Maschima, is full of cosmic animations and floating scenes, reinforcing the song's astronaut theme.
  • The album title was inspired by English novelist and journalist Matt Haig's Notes on a Nervous Planet, which Roland Orzabal found particularly helpful back in 2018 when grappling with social media's anxiety-inducing nature. Songs for a Nervous Planet explores how the relentless flow of digital information shapes our perceptions and challenges our peace of mind.
  • Tears For Fears recorded the live tracks during a July 11, 2023, show at FirstBank Amphitheater in Franklin, Tennessee.
  • The album is accompanied by a concert film titled Tears For Fears Live (A Tipping Point Film).
