• Swims wrote "Break Up In Reverse" with John Ryan, Julian Bunetta, Matt Zara, Mikky Ekko and Tommy King. Earlier in his career, Swims, Bunetta and Ekko co‑wrote his breakthrough singles "Lose Control" and "The Door," before expanding the team to include Ryan when they collaborated with him on "Bad Dreams."
• The song's structure was inspired by Nas' 2001 storytelling masterpiece "Rewind," which unfolds entirely backwards, revealing a crime story from its ending to its beginning. "With 'Break Up In Reverse,' we were super inspired by an old Nas song called 'Rewind,'" said Swims. "We loved how the whole song takes place in reverse. So we thought, how beautiful would it be if we took the same idea but wrote it about my relationship, with the punchline being, 'Say goodbye to me in the beginning and love me in the end.'"
• Bunetta, Ryan, Zara and King produced the track. On the recording, the core band is essentially the production team: Bunetta on bass, drums and guitars; Ryan on guitars and keys; Zara on bass, guitars and keys; and King on drums and keys, with programming roles overlapping.
• Swims first performed "Break Up In Reverse" live during his set at BottleRock Napa Valley on May 23, 2026, giving fans an early glimpse of the song before its official release as a single on July 10, 2026.
• The accompanying music video, directed by Lewis Cater (whose résumé includes videos for Cobra Starship, Shinedown and Dan + Shay), brings the song's concept to life. It begins with Swims standing amid the wreckage of a relationship in a battered home.
