Songfacts®:

  • On this heart-tugging love song, Matty Healy's romantic partner has gone away. Because he's missing her, the adulation from the crowds and the music in his ears are meaningless. All Healy wants to hear is his sweetheart telling him she loves him.
  • The romantic piano ballad is the sort of classic pop number Healy feels a bit overawed to sing. Along with their 2018 song "I Couldn't Be More in Love," he considers them "songs that could be performed better than I can perform them," he told Apple Music's Zane Lowe.

"It's something that Adele could sing," Healy added. "It would make total sense, and she wouldn't have to talk about jacking off or what the usual subject matter is."
  • Healy told Pitchfork that when they created the track, his goal was to make something that "sounds like a cover." The 1975 singer said drummer George Daniel joked to him he didn't think he'd written the song, which was "my favorite thing he's ever said to me."
  • The 1975 recorded "All I Need To Hear" in one take for Being Funny In A Foreign Language. Healy and Daniel co-produced the album with Taylor Swift and Lorde collaborator Jack Antonoff. The American producer focused throughout the record on the band's instrumental strong-suits and kept things as live as possible.
  • Matty Healy debuted the song when he performed a stripped-down, acoustic version on October 22, 2021, during a surprise set at Phoebe Bridgers' Reunion Tour.
  • The 1975 released "All I Need To Hear" on September 22, 2022, accompanied by a Samuel Bradley-directed live performance video shot at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios.
