Songfacts®:

  • Matty Healy's father, Benidorm and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet actor Tim Healy, wrote the basis of this piano ballad around 1990. The 1975 singer explained to Apple Music that his dad was in a band at the time and he wrote this song for his mother, who was suffering from postnatal depression. Matty previously recounted his mum's depression after giving birth to him on the 2016 track "She Lays Down."
  • Matty had heard his father playing the song on the piano his entire life, but there'd never been a recording of it until they recorded it for Notes On A Conditional Form. The album as a whole deals with Healy's life and family, so he felt it was a good fit.
  • Tim Healy also contributes to the track. "It's me and my dad singing - that was just a really special moment," said Matty. "He's a good songwriter, my dad. It's a very 1975 interpretation of his work. And he loves that. He's very, very proud to be on the record."
  • The Rindon Johnson-directed, digitally animated video shows a person walking through a deserted neighborhood. He looks up to observe through an apartment block window a muscular dancer making moves.

After hearing the song, Johnson explained he envisioned a charming and sexy moment of distant connection in a pollution-free utopia with orchards on the street providing healthy food for all. "I closed my eyes and sort of felt the movement of a really gentle dance and thought it might be a nice way to speak towards that sensation. To think about different forms of closeness," he said. "I also didn't want to do anything too over the top because the song demands something quiet and straightforward; a kind of direct address to another person."
