The Goo Goo Dolls Artistfacts

  • Their original name was The Sex Maggots. They changed it when a promoter refused to book them until they got rid of it. They got the name "Goo Goo Dolls" from an ad in True Detective magazine. Of the band's name, Johnny Rezenik said, "We had a gig that night and needed a name. It's the best we came up with, and for some reason it stuck. If I had five more minutes, I definitely would have picked a better name."
  • They released five albums before their fifth, A Boy Named Goo, became a hit in 1995. Their early albums did well on college radio and in their home town of Buffalo, New York.
  • Their biggest hits, "Name," "Iris" and "Slide," are ballads which are not typical of their ordinarily harder sound.
  • Rzeznik started living on his own when he was 15.
  • Goo Goo Dolls songs show up all over the media, including the movies Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, City of Angels, Son in Law, Transformers and Tommy Boy, as well as a promotional video for their hometown NHL team Buffalo Sabres, the television show Jericho, and promos for the 2008 Olympics.
  • Malinin replaced their previous drummer George Tutuska shortly before the just before the Boy Named Goo tour. He knew all their previous songs and was a fan before he joined the ranks. >>

  • Their single, "We Are Normal" was penned by The Replacements singer, Paul Westerberg. Initially, it got attention from college radio and MTV's show 120 Minutes. Their next single, "Falling Down" appeared in the 1993 Pauly Shore comedy, Son in Law.
  • Goo Goo Dolls were originally singed to Metal Blade records and hold the distinction of being the first band on that label's history to achieve double platinum status. That success, however, would prove to be bittersweet. The band soon found themselves in the middle of legal battles with the label and eventually settling. Soon after, Goo Goo Dolls would sign to Warner Brothers.
  • Singer/Guitarist, Johnny Rezenik penned the song "Iris" for the Nicolas Cage/Meg Ryan romance, City of Angles. The song would spend 18 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and earn the band three Grammy Nominations. According to Rezenik, prior to writing "Iris" he was suffering from serious writer's block and considered leaving the band. "Iris" changed all of that.
  • John Rezenik's last name means "butcher" in Polish.
  • John Rzeznik married his long-term girlfriend Melina Gallo on July 26, 2013 in Malibu in front of his bandmates and 120 guests. The couple have been together since 2005.
  • Rzeznik does the majority of their songwriting, and considers that his musical legacy. "I don't really care about the whole rock star thing," he said in his Songfacts interview. "It's more important to me to be a writer. I'd like to be remembered more for being a songwriter than a guy in a band."

Rzeznik was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2008.
  • Asked about his typical songwriting process by American Songwriter magazine, John Rzeznik replied: "I guess the process starts with sitting down and figuring out where my head is - where I'm at in my own life - and then spending a lot of time with the guitar, just going over and over and over things, playing for hundreds of hours. There might be a little piece of an idea in something. I try hard not to judge too much at that stage of the game. Then I get together with a producer or my writing partners and we try to take the ideas to the next level."

  • Anne from Ne YorkJust have been an ongoing fan of Goo Goo Dolls, Johnny's music speaks to me and touches your heart, soo much crap out there but every song I've heard makes me want to listen to them over and over again and I do. I find comfort listening to Johnny's Lyrics there truly is no group like the Goo Goo dolls. So Johnny your writing and Music mean a lot to many and will continue to touch the next generation. You guys are amazing!
  • David Amaral from Bathurst, AustraliaThese guys performed at a festival in Sydney in 2002 called M-One. The concert series was a flop but the line up of artist of awesome!!! Best music day of my life. Anyhow that's another story for another time. The Goo Goo Dolls was one bands I was looking forward to seeing as I was a huge fan of their stuff. They performed Slide and Broadway and before they started singing "Name", John Rzeznik said "This song needs no introduction" and started to sing the song "Name". Most of the people were expecting "Iris" as that was huge in Australia whereas "Name" didn't even chart out here, unlike America.
Most of the time when a singer says that the crowd goes mental, well in this case the crowd was like, what is that song!!
For myself, I knew the song and loved it that they played it but for most people it was not "Iris".

I will say the M-One line up was Simple Plan (2nd band on stage as they were an unknown band), Default, Lifehouse, Nickelback, Tea Party, Midnight Oil, Billy Idol, Garbage, Goo Goo Dolls. Whitlams. I was front row all day and was just awesome

  • Kim from Pittsburgh, Pai'm IN LOVE with the goo goo dolls, i think i like their harder stuff like on a boy named goo better than the ballady stuff like on let love in, but that is not to say i am not completely infatuated with every single one of them. only one is my favorite but black balloon is a very close second.
  • Andrew from Catasauqua, PaNo one really knows why George left. All I've heard is that he and John had a falling out and unreconsiable differences. I think it had something to do with where the band was going. George didn't want the "garage door" to close. He felt as if they were selling out, when in fact they were growing up.
  • Erin from Maxwell, IaI saw the Goo Goo Dolls in concert at the Val Air Ballroom along with Carbon Leaf as the opening band. It was amazing even though it was like 100 degreese in there. Both bands are amazing :)

  • Jonie from Alameda, CaWhen I first got into the Goo Goo Dolls, I had no idea who they were and I guess that helped me judge their music with an unbiased view. Then I looked up a few pics on the Net and... well, I didn't really think much of it, just "Hey, they're talented AND cute! Unlike certain boy bands who survive on looks and generic slightly above average voices. Then I found out the Goos had been around for years, which was another point and I immediately began my collecting of the Goo. 3--no, 5 for losing two copies of Dizzy--lost CDs and 6 more claimed, I can safely say I'm off to a good start. Funny story really. I don't like talking about it. :)
