Songfacts®:

  • This vulnerable ballad sounds like a love song about a codependent couple who refuses to call it quits, but it's actually a testament to Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites' 20-year friendship. Long before they became famous for their 2012 debut single, "Ho Hey," the Lumineers founders stood by each other through painful losses and the arduous journey of building their music career. The song reflects the sometimes claustrophobic feeling of being tied to one person for so long while admitting they wouldn't have it any other way.

"This relationship has given both of us EVERYTHING," Fraites told The Sun in a 2025 interview. "You're all I got' is an exaggerated way of looking at it. I'm sure there are days when Wes and I wish we just could go out and have a sandwich without feeling any of the stress or responsibility. We both have friends in our lives for that, but I've never written songs with them that have changed my life."

Schultz added: "We know we need each other to make the best of things. We're better together!"
  • Schultz pushed his vocals to the limit to bring the emotion out of the lyrics. "It's on the edge of where I can hit a note, so you feel that tension," he explained. "When you're saying to someone, 'You're all I got,' it carries that same raw emotion."
  • The outro references the Greek mythological figure Sisyphus, a king who was condemned to push a boulder up a mountain for eternity after he betrayed the powerful god Zeus and cheated death. Schultz compares himself to the cursed king, claiming he can't give up the relationship even if he wanted to:

And I can't give it up like Sisyphus
    Below the rock
    You're all that I got
