Songfacts®:

  • "Don't Wake Me Up In The Morning, Michael" is one of two Peppermint Rainbow songs to crack the Hot 100 (the other being their biggest hit, "Will You Be Staying After Sunday?").

Harmonized by the sisters Patty and Bonnie Lamdin acting as one narrator, the song is a plea for "Michael" not to wake them in the morning unless he plans on sticking around. Despite the painful lyrics, the song sounds upbeat and even sort of happy, with full orchestral backing. In that way, it's very similar to "Will You Be Staying After Sunday," which in turn is similar to fellow sunshine pop outfit Spanky & Our Gang's hit, "Sunday Will Never Be the Same."

One may be tempted to think that this repetitiveness led to the Peppermint Rainbow calling it quits after one LP release, but fans and critics of the day felt they had a bright future ahead. The band actually gave up the music business because they found out a manager was stealing their money. They became disillusioned to the whole industry and moved on their way.
