Songfacts®:

  • "I Guess I'll Miss the Man" was written by Stephen Schwartz for the Broadway musical Pippin, where it's sung by Jill Clayburgh. Her version is on the original cast recording, which was issued on Motown Records. Motown also had their group The Supremes release the song that year as a single and included it on their album The Supremes Produced and Arranged by Jimmy Webb.

The song comes near the end of Pippin, sung by the character Catherine. It's a breakup song where she comes to terms with the split.
  • Of the 11 songs from the album, "I Guess I'll Miss the Man" is the only one that was not produced by Jimmy Webb. It was produced by Sherlie Matthews and Deke Richards.
  • Diana Ross had left The Supremes by this time; the lead vocal is by Jean Terrell. Their songs around this time were just a sliver as successful as they were in their '60s heyday when they were cranking out hit after hit for Motown. The song peaked at #85, giving them one of their last charting songs.
